The Body Scan ~ 30 minutes
The Body Scan is part of the evidence-based Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program developed by the world renowned Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn. The entire program assists people to develop a practical approach to stress, anxiety, depression and pain, so as to invite more choice and wise action in our lives.
The Body Scan involves slowly tuning into sensation throughout the entire body. We start at the toes moving up through the body, as a way of getting out of the head and into the body. The challenge is to feel without moving, feeling the breath moving in and out of the body region. Then to let go of it and move on.
It cultivates concentration and mindfulness together, being present with any pain/discomfort, rather than distancing from this. We put out the ‘Welcome mat’. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
